How to Choose a Tap Value

The tap value (dB) is how much the tap drops the signal from the main line to its subscriber ports. A higher value sends less signal to the drops and leaves more on the main line.

  • Close to the amplifier or node (strong signal): higher values, e.g. 20–26 dB.
  • Mid-span: mid values, e.g. 14–17 dB.
  • End of line (weaker signal): lower values. Lowest available: 2-Way 4 dB, 4-Way 8 dB, 8-Way 11 dB.
  • Rule of thumb: tap input level minus tap value minus drop cable loss should land within your system's target level at the home.
  • Port count: choose 2-, 4- or 8-way by the number of homes served at that point.
